All music on Purveyors was played on synths (kit list already on this thread). You can get very close to live instrument sound if you play/program the sound correctly - it's all about; tone, timing and dynamics.

Haven't heard 4 hero's LP - To be honest... I didn't really listen to anyone else as I was in the studio every day for years - so didn't have time. Also I wanted my sound to be absolutley recognisable. I probably managed this by not being influenced too much by what others were doing (although you can't completley avoid it).

Thanks again for the reply Ron, your sound was/is very distinct and original!

Can you tell us a bit about the basement/sound entity process from a mastered tune to getting it on vinyl? Not the actual pressing process but the basement process, did you used to do anything in particular? who used to master the basement records/your productions, roughly how long did it take from the finished tune to it getting released?
Did you deal with that or was it something vinyl distribution did?

Hi Ron,

Sorry to bother you with another question, and apologies if it's been covered already! Were all the stabs you used from those synths you listed, or did you use samples as well?

Cheers!

Yes, we used to sample a single notes and make new riffs with the sound but most of the time we used my synths

I saw you mentioned unreleased bits. If you have the time it might be good to provide links to low quality clips of each to gauge what people on here think of them.
You'll probably find some people on here will want all of them :-) but as a test of what tunes would be worth putting to vinly, this would be a good starting point.
It's been done many times before on here with other unreleased tunes.

Anyway, just a thought mate....it's not like I'm desperate to hear them or anything

Wow, thanks for this Ron. Just listening now and what can I say. Awesome tune. I just LOVE the pads/string sounds. You don't hear sounds like this in modern drum n bass. As always, top notch arrangement, but I could just listen to the pads on their own.

It's strange you've posted this - I've been listening to Earl Grey - "Promises, Promises" off your Purveyors album, and it's another great tune. I also listened to a few of your bits on MySpace and noticed you have a different mix of "Earl's Court (Dreamin')" on the Purveyors album. Both sound very good.

For me, this is music. Enough said I think. More please (pads and jazzy organs)!

Hi Joe,

Well... I had to come on here and clear a few things up regarding throwing away those tunes - I didn't want it to be seen as anger or even arrogance, lazyness however yes.

:-)

Hi Ron,

Just listened to your Eternity magazine mix and I love it. It's credit to you that you produced a great multi-genre mix in a time (until Coldcut's 70 'Minutes of Madness') when it wasn't really considered by other DJ's...

Was that gabba tune near the end ever released? I can't seem to find any details...

Aye, very nice indeed. The rest of the tune isn't really my thing but those pads are gorgeous.

A lot of your work has an atmospheric edge. Have you ever done any ambient tracks, or considered putting anything together? As Jamie says, the pads at the start of that clip would be great to listen to on their own.

4. Do you have any unreleased tunes on DAT's from 91-94?
5. Did you produce this record below?
I've got a bet on with someone that you did, because it is credited to someone else :-)

1. Yes I have a list of sorts but there are too many tunes/aliases even for me to remember - about 300
2. Yes I have the DAT for 20 Hurts
3. I'm currently exporing my options in terms of back catalogue release and release of future work
4. Yes, I have some un released stuff
5. I'm afraid you have lost your bet, it's definatley not me but I can see what they were doing. If you check you won't find that many type vocals on my stuff - should have been a clue, hope you haven't bet much money on it.
