on a post-apocalyptic tip, i can thoroughly recommend these:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riddley_Walker
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Riddley-Walker- ... 899&sr=1-1

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Death_of_Grass
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Death-Grass-Pen ... =pd_cp_b_2

'riddley walker' is an underrated work of genius. read it if you liked 'a clockwork orange' even a little bit.

also, this is great:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hothouse_(novel)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hothouse-Pengui ... d_sim_b_11

very strange and trippy. i tend of think of it as the story which 'avatar' deserved. it's all set on a kind of jungle world with giant insects and stuff.

I read it about ten years ago and hated it. Almost gave up on it which is something I rarely do.

I don't think I've read any Barker since, except for a re-read of Cabal; it put me off that much.

I read it when i was in my late teens and can't recall whether i finished it or not at the time. I know I read Great and Secret Show cover-to-cover but my memory of Weaveworld peters out around the end of book 1, before they go into the fugue.

I'm really enjoying it at the moment, Shadwell has just hooked up with Imacolata again after the encounter with the lions. Tis all good.

Fair enough, tis a lengthy tome fo'sure. I just discovered this, a load of the books of blood and everville in a box that was hanging around my folks' loft. love some of the short stories.

definitely go for 'death of grass' out of that lot, it's dark as you like. i think you'll enjoy 'slaughterhouse 5' if you like philip k. dick's trippier stuff, like 'a scanner darkly', which i personally do. vonnegut at his best is a superior writer, though.

was it you who liked alfred bester's 'the star's my destination'? i can remember someone on here rating it. that's also a top read, if you haven't read it.

That might have been me with Tiger Tiger (that's what it's called on my copy at least). Excellent book.
Gully Foyle is my name
And Terra is my nation
Deep space is my dwelling place
And death's my destination.

Its length wasn't the issue, I've no problem with long books; I'll quite happily breeze through LotR, Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy or Tad Williams four Otherland books.
