Who's got the most oldskool car on here then?

Post by inferno » Tue May 19, 2009 10:33 am

I know for a fact that I don't have the oldest on here. I drive a 1993 L reg ford escort.
Would be nice to see what other members of the forum own... and possibly have some pics posted too.

I've managed to keep our orange 1979 VW bus running with popsicle sticks and rubber bands, the thing is an utter workhorse:

Image

Ours is freckled with rust from living on the beach, has sand in every crevice, loads of surf stickers from old sponsors and surf shops, and the sunroof was cruelly siliconed closed by a well-meaning idiot (not me!). It has taken me on surfari deep into the wilds of Baja in Mexico, loaded with stoners on snowboard trips to Lake Tahoe, and everywhere in between. The California license plate I inherited from the previous hippie owner was SYCADLC (Psychedelic), and lost somewhere in one of the air ducts back in 1995 is a large, dense, green nugget of the finest bud you could hope to smoke...

My car is pretty oldskool...

It's a 1988 Volvo 240GLT Automatic saloon...

The same basic car is an evolution of a 1960s design...

In spotless metallic grey with all the toys...

Stock as a rock with original alloys,
Heated leather seats,
Electric Everything,
CD PLayer,
Sub-box in the boot,
2.3 litre motor,
The laziest car I have ever driven....
Stick it in Drive, crank up the tunes and cruise....

And it cost me £300. Insurance is almost free (Classic Insurance is less than £100)... More reliable than any shite I could afford with the two grand Labour will give me to scrap it and so uncool that's it's actually far cooler than any of my mates cars (which include Porsches, Ferraris, Rangies etc - there's nothing as uncool as trying too hard).

Keeping a reliable old car is much more environmentally friendly than scrapping and buying new (as long as you keep it in good running order) and I actually enjoy tooling around in it far more than driving my modern company car...

And being a Volvo it is officially indestructible - If I did try and scrap it, it would undoubtedly break the crusher and then go on a "Christine" style rampage taking out its frustration on gullible people in Toyota Prius's who don't realise the environmental implications of driving round in a car made out of two tons of highly toxic dogshite that will cost thousands to scrap when it reaches the end of its pitifully short service life.

Lol, nearly all my mates drive old skool Volvos, they love them. mate has had a volvo 340 for about 5 years that be bought for a tenner. Still runs fine.

I don't drive myself, but if i could i'd probably be spinning around in an Austin Allegro lol

Classic mate, Have you had any welding done to this to keep it on the road? I had to have my sills welded to keep my ford on the road in my last MOT.

Thats pretty oldskool! He's wanted one since we were teenagers (he always was a strange child) and its his pride and joy now, he goes in for all the owners club malarkey and everything

Nice, I've fantasised about owning a mint black 240 turbo estate on gunmetal five-spoke Volvo alloys and a few low key engine and suspension tweaks. Ultimate understated Swedish mafia wagon. Or Jewish sprogmobile, depending on your leaning...

Always had a soft spot for outwardly stock 240's with mental drivetrain mods as well, like this twin turbo six-cylinder Supra engined sleeper:

Wow, I thought I was the only one on here with an old Volvo auto - respect!

I've got an S40 SE with all the toys (full leather, A/C, winter pack, etc.), I call her the Vulva :D - she's very comfy.

I've already got a couple of foldup chairs and a golfing brolly in the boot and I'm saving up for travel rugs, a box of tissues, and a nodding dog for the back seat.

Apologies inferno was just a fantasy of mine, I had one years ago (exactly the same) and am thinking of making a nostalgic purchase, just to play around with. I'm looking for the old XR2 version but cant find many around!!
