There are some great freebies out there although its slightly limiting being a Logic user and restricted to Audio Units.
I do use the TAL stuff a lot (especially the Dub II Delay). There are some pretty good freebies from Bluecat (especially the Spectrum Analyser) and Voxengo. The Oscilloscope that Sike posted is really useful. I do like the ZebraCM synth that comes with Computer Music (good for evolving pads) although I'm not using it quite so much since I bought Massive.
Sorry I can't do the fancy links to anything at the moment as I'm at work.

I'd imagine you could easily make a simple command line wrapper in Automator/AppleScript in the meanwhile, or just run it in Parallels/Fusion.

They have quite a few free vst plugins. Some are aimed at teaching/learning sound theory such as harmonics and basic synth features (filters, envelopes etc)
And others are full synths such as an Arp Odyssey emulation and now a vst version of Aderns Kickme which was previously only available on Soniccore Scope before.
