Post by eazyflow » Sun Nov 29, 2015 11:44 am

In balance to my other thread I thought it only fair to make a thread about the many times Formation got it right, Starting with this one:

The 'End Of An Era EP' is possibly my favourite Formation release. Didn't know there was an unreleased version of Void of Extasy. Any audio floating about?

Formation was one of the label i got lots of early on in my collecting days. Part of the fun was the great different coloured company sleeves as well

Concentrating on 1992 and 1993 these are my faves

EQ - I'm So High - Love the Strings Of Life riff being cut up. Genius!

Megadrive - Takin Control EP - Love this EP to pieces but Mindscapes when the piano comes in at 2.22 is the nuts.

Oaysis - Incredible Bass - Such a lush tune

Brainstorm Crew - Pick Up The Pace - Wicked referential tune

Darkman - Darkman - Heard this on many a Bukem tape. The beginnings of the dark side of Formation

DJ SS - Wake Up Call - Loads of breakbeats being mashed up

Rhythm For Reasons - Arabian Nights - Only ever heard this on a Randall tape. Lovely atmospherical tune.

Rhythm For Reasons - Heavy On Your Head (Remix) - Big Ratty tune and much better than the original mix

EQ - So Damn Tuff (Remixed By Ray Keith) - Ray Keith tears it up. Lovely the section with the bassline and "bass" vocals.

Too many to mention, Formation were a favourite label of mine back then, they didn't always hit, but the quality was always up there that all their new stuff were always an essential listen, same with the F-Projects - mind you, saying that, I tried to listen to everything anyway as you never knew what was going to come out of the speakers at any given record..

I'll add this one to the above list:

Shockingly good and can be yours for £2.99 on discogs..

Here's another..

Strings of Darkness on that EP was good, but was a casualty of their production/pressing unfortunately as we've been discussing, and honestly, it was that drop after the piano on the Darkrider EP that made that tune for me, so after 'believe me baby', I'm always wanting/expecting those rolling breaks. Still, if the audio hadn't been so distorted when it all starts going I'd have played it a lot more...

That's why Music In Search Of Light Remix is my favourite Formation tune, it's one of the few not to fall victim to the terrible distortion and mastering the label is famous for. A lot of their releases would be worthy of remakes.
