The one tape you have or had...that got you into the scene

Post by DJ Delight » Sat Nov 02, 2013 4:32 pm

Been having a mass sort out of my tapes recently...one i particular stood out(mainly because it was so battered and been repaired numerous times) :)

It wasn't til early 93 that i got into the scene...and that was down to the girl i was seein at the time whose tape it was. Before that from 1990 onward i was into hip hop in a big way,so this was a slight departure but i took to it .In fact had we not met and gone out for the 2 years that we did i probably wouldn't be typing this now

This is the one that done it for me...and i have to say ...i still think it's the bollox! :-D

This was the first rave tape I ever bought, from Freestyle in Farnborough where I got a lot of my Swing tapes too. Still got it! Lost the case though.

Mystic Man was one of those marmite MCs you loved or hated, I remember everyone cussing him at school. Personally I thought he was hilarious! Its a really good set.

So this is a 92 tune then! I always thought it was later and have got it with my 93 tracks, its so fast and the production sounds very 93 in style. I thought it was wrong on Discogs.

I also got into the scene through a girl, I was very much into music as a child and was already into the more commercial electronic stuff but it wasn't until I went to Butlins in August 92 that I discovered the underground. There were loads of rave tapes doing the rounds and I was lent a Mickey Finn tape which I blasted in my stereo all week, it totally changed my life. Went there a kid into video games, came back obsessed with Hardcore! Sold all that stuff and six months later I was the proud owner of 1210s! They're still going strong 21 years later :)

I don't have the original copied tape any more, but my first was Easygroove @ Second Sight. Copied it off a mate in late 92, still had it until my mum threw all my tapes and flyers out a few years ago :( that along with Ellis Dee @ One Step Beyond were the 2 tapes that are single handedly responsible for getting me in to it all!

ouch! was it by accident or did you leave the toilet seat up one too many times?

my folks threw out all their vinyl after getting a CD player back in the 90s, loads of first edition beatles / elton john / rolling stones / hendrix and other fantastic stuff, i was totally gobsmacked when i found out. my mum regrets it now, especially when i told her how much its all worth.

DJ Dynamix or DJ Dynamics (As it was spelt like that on the tape) @ The Dance Paradise 1994 with the MC Jester. Old Skool Hardcore/Happy Hardcore mix cross over.

My older sister brought this tape back from a mate of hers in college I was only 10 at the time, I knew from then I wouldn't go down the music mainstream route.

I have ripped it to MP3 but might need RG to get rid of some of the hiss as its quite bad. Not actually sure where the original tape is now.

Anyone up for listening to it?

Ratty - Fantazia: Second Sight.

I started listening and buying Jungle tape-packs when I was 11 due to me hanging around with lads who we 13/14 years old at the time, and we were heavily into Jungle. But as daft as it sounds, I immediately noticed how the beats changed around '96. And it was about that time (well, it was then 1997) that I started getting to really know a cousin of mine who went to the raves back in the day. He told me that he had loads of tapes that I could borrow (Quest, Fantazia, Amnesia House etc) and I found the Ratty tape that I'm talking about.

WOW! I was blown away. The mixing style, the music, the MC and what seemed like the atmosphere, blew me to pieces. Instantly I was converted.

I've listened to that tape hundreds, maybe even THOUSANDS of times and it STILL blows me away.

My favourite set ever by my favourite DJ ever.

What I'd give to have been there for that set!

They were in a box in a shed for about 5 years after I moved out and to be fair had probably gone damp and mouldy by then. But she had no idea, didn't even look inside the box, just chucked it! I think it even had an old stereo head unit in it too.

I'd been listening to a bit of radio in Scotland and all the rave stuff that had got into the top 40. Then I moved down south, went to school and some guy in my year said "that's not hardcore" and the next day gave me this to listen to:

With Mickey Finn on the other side. Which is a good set, but this is a killer. Never looked back :)

You know, it's only on listening to it again now that I realise the mixing is pretty ropey  Still love it though.

I think the first mix-tape i owned was from Xmas 1991 - DJ Tecx @ Kicks in Braintree. It got rinsed out ad nauseum. It was only one side. Ropey mixing. Ok tune selection i suppose ("Way in my brain", "DJ's Take Control", "Nightbird", "Android"......). I think i've still got it somewhere.......
