What is your favourite Oldskool set of all time?

Post by Restless » Tue Apr 30, 2013 10:05 am

Mine is Ratty @ Fantazia (Second Sight).

It was the first hardcore tape that I ever listened to and I'm still listening to it 16 years later.

So much energy in that set. The track selection is brilliant as well. Nice selection of skills on show, too.

So, what is your favourite Oldskool set and what makes it your favourite Oldskool set?

I think my favourite set is Easygroove @ Fantazia Second Sight. This set has everything:

- Atmosphere
- A (good) MC
- Anthems
- Obscure tracks
- Various styles - happy, dark, jungle, techno
- Decent mixing (for the era)
- and finally, it just flows really well. It's like a good album, you have to listen to the whole thing to appreciate it.

There are many great sets, but few that tick all of the above boxes.

either Easygroove @ Dreamscape 7 - i love the stuff he was playing back then, and this is just the one i've listened to the most i think!

Ellis Dee @ World Dance Easter 94 - not only is it loads of stuff i like from that time when happy and jungle were just about still linked...but you can really hear the atmosphere, sounds like it was recorded from the perspective of someone standing at the front of the crowd! (i know it wouldn't have been, obviously :P)

and depending how far oldskool can stretch, Druid @ Helter Skelter Technodrome Dec 95 ;)

Mine must be Randall @ Kiss FM 30.03.1994 , i think i played this over 50 times already and still not tired of it !
Eventwise i think i'll have to go with Randall again , his AWOL set from the Live In London Volume 3 , Late 1992

Including the Banana Split song IIRC !

Its really hard to nail down my absolute favourite.

I'll go for Pilgrim at Universe Tribal Gathering, this set blew me away on the night - has atmosphere, great tunes, mixing, MC.

Easygroove Eclipse 91 would run it close and is more of an album type set.

Two tapes changed my perspective on music.

First one was Ratty @ Dance Nation Summer Ball 1992, being from Scotland and only twelve/thirteen at the time I had only really heard what was in the charts. I bought this tape out of a shop in Edinburgh and was then hooked on the sound of the breaks on it. It sounded like something so much more complex and underground compared to the crap on the radio up here.
I basically bought any hardcore that sounded like that tape for the next six months. I tried to ID a few tunes but DJ's in shops weren't too happy with a twelve year old asking 'have you got that cuckoo tune or the nutcracker one'?!
Have since bought every tune on the tape. Even witnessed a dj that used to be on here claiming that the cuckoo in the jungle vs grand national mash up was his idea on breakpirates.

Second tape was Top Buzz at the Edge (red face) late 1992

The shop where I bought most of my hardcore from told me about this tape and sold it to me. I took it home thinking it would be like the Ratty tape but wasn't too pleased when I first listened to it. This was the first time I had heard an entire mix of early jungle tunes. After the third or so time I listened to it I started to really enjoy it and heard tunes like nasty habits - let's go or living in darkness.
IMO this tape is as good as it gets for an example of how hardcore changed into jungle.
Absolute classic.

Hi,

Got to be SY at Fantazia New Years '91 (Westpoint). This was a VERY rare cassette BITD

Followed very closely by SY at Obsession IIIrd Dimension (Westpoint).

Both sets are kind os a 'best of' 91, then 92, but with top class mixing, cutting, and scratching. also, MCing is top-notch.

Randall & Kenny Ken - Bank Holiday - AWOL - 1993

I've listened to that set countless times over the years and have yet to get bored of hearing it. Amazing tunes and great mixing. As an added bonus MC GQ doesn't overpower the music. Come to think of it, it's probably my favourite MCing during a set also. "Absolutely t for tremendous!"

Ratty at Club Dreamscape - 13th Nov 1992.

I was there and it was superb to watch, got the tape and it was equally as good. Must have heard it 100's of times over the last 20 years!

Slipmatt + Juiceman @ Equinox from early 1993. Rinsed so much the tape broke umpteen times - and for the final time before i actually managed to rip it. Bought from North Weald market BITD.
I also like Seduction @ Littlecote House and all of the Ratty + Randall 'Edge' tapes.......and Randall @ Roast, Boxing Day 1993.
