First "Jungle" tune debate
First "Jungle" tune debate
I don't care what anyone says, LTJ bukem Deamons Theme is without a doubt the first. people will go on and say We are Ie is the first but to me that sounds more just straight up hardcore with the reggae influence in there. Demon's theme is like 2 years infront. it's 1992 but it sounds 1994.

Demons Theme wasn't as early as previously thought but it's still a damn good tune.
Re: First "Jungle" tune debate
A Guy Called Gerald - 28 Gun Bad Boy sounds far more like an early / proto jungle tune to me, and is credited as September 1991.
Personally I can't hear any way at all that Demon's Theme is a jungle tune. Well made, atmospheric hardcore for sure but not jungle to my ears...

I know they are not as early as 91, but i think some of the noise factory output was really jungle defining for 92.

Surely it's Lenny De Ice - We are IE?
Re: First "Jungle" tune debate
Often nominated but too hardcore IMO, it has a 4/4 kick!23eHeure wrote:Surely it's Lenny De Ice - We are IE?
Re: First "Jungle" tune debate
these are 91, but are they 'jungle'?

Ahh OK, sorry I guess I should have read the first post which said We are IE is off limits!dj jedi wrote:Often nominated but too hardcore IMO, it has a 4/4 kick!23eHeure wrote:Surely it's Lenny De Ice - We are IE?
Do we open that debate over of what is hardcore VS what is D&B VS what is jungle vs etc etc. ?
For me the answer is always too elusive: If I can't decide, then how cxan I expect anyone else to agree either!
Instead for me it's about the mood, that cant put your finger on it realisation of a new style when it comes along. Here's my own take, (please allow me a degree of stating the obvious!):
One of the best things about the early rave scene was that everything - the music, the crowds and the vibes - was an eclectic mix of various styles and attitudes.
The initial (killer!) formula was Ecstacy + Music, and the resulting buzz drew all these diverse groups together.
So to find a nice 'clean' example of an early 'jungle' tune (or example of any other specific genre) is nigh on impossible.
Every genre instead came out of that initial 'mix of styles' approach.
Jungle started to mature into and find it's own distinct sound in '93, same time as the rave and club scene itself properly fragmented.
If I had to name when I first started to hear "that jungle sound" - albeit mixed in with something else - I'd have to say for me it was the 90/91 releases from Rebel MC.
Now... discuss!

Hi,
How would you defind 'jungle' anyway? IMO nothing really sounds like jungle until 1993, everything pre 1993 sounds far too much like hardcore.
I think it is a lot easier to define Drum and Bass, but that obviously didn't emerge until 1994

Re: First "Jungle" tune debate
This is the earlist tune I can think of that is definitely a jungle tune, from 1992:

Amens, bass, reggae samples, no kicks or synths etc.

Demon's Theme ''part 2''. Excellent tune, prefer it to the original, -

Re: First "Jungle" tune debate
this could be a strong contender as well:
Re: First "Jungle" tune debate
The seeds of jungle were planted way before tracks like demons theme,as back as 91 as already mentioned by some,
First off I guess the best way to come to a conclusion where we all agree is to take apart what jungle means to most!
I always thought jungle was a fusion of techno and ragga/reggae bitd when the term was first being used,
( that was in 1991) I remember a conversation I had with dj phantasy in 91 regarding the new sound "jungle"
And how his next track was going to be of this sound of which he described of! Beats which aren't a straight forward pattern or classic break loop, heavier and darker, with that he released his jungle ep.
Now in know way am I saying that is classic jungle what was to come.
But the elements of spatial breaks and darker Riffs compared to lighter happier uplifting hardcore tracks of the time are definitely in there. A seed for others to master?
Also other seed planters are labels like Ibiza recs & and limited e, ESP noise factory, if you listen to what they were doing in 91 & 92 it's of the same experimentation, spatial breaks and more darker riffs etc and that faster tempo than the normal hardcore track of the same time. More jungle techno rather hardcore jungle say like the moog ep etc.
Now nearly 20 years on we look back and have the ability to see where periods began or ended and the general rule seems to be hardcore's peak reign was from 91/92 and jungle's 93/94 ( doesn't mean to say there wasn't tunes before of after these dates)
The sound what we all refer to as definitive jungle in general is that of 93, potential bad boy springs to mind also there's a track of mystery 159 remix ep ( inside track , can't remember it's name ) that for me difines that jungle sound!
I'm sure someone will disagree, but it wouldn't be a debate otherwise
