i think Derrick May's comments directly after are quite apposite for this thread...ie, why do people get so bloody hung up on names?

Wondered the same the first time i seen it - almost out of touch, maybe just the way he describes certain vibes and tunes

 i watched the whole of this doc last saturday and thought the same thing

"first there was house, then Happy Hardcore, then disco, then jungle, then Chuck Berry, then HCB"

The earlier ones when the on about the Paradise Garage and spiking the free punch with acid is pretty cool

It's quite easy to think that just because we still listen to this music, guys like Carl Cox still do too. I bet he hasn't got a clue what year or label most of the tracks he played in the early 90s were - he's always been a new music DJ. I can't remember the names, years etc of the D+B I used to play in 97 because I sold it all 10 years ago! So I think we can forgive the fact that the tracks he calls "happy hardcore" like the Shoop stuff he used to play didn't come out quite at the time he remembers.

Joey Beltram thought he produced house music with a different edge...

absolutely. we're obsessed with genre names over here. especially in 'house'. Fucking hell, is there any other music that has so many ridiculous sub-genre names?

Think clown step and bungle are piss take names for 'jump up' main room dnb. Pendulum kind of stuff. There's loads of others though which I just can't remember. Personally think Neurofunk is one of the weirdest. I mean what the fuck is that supposed to be?!?
