He brought some tunes to the studio to sample, he had some good ideas, but he didn't really compose those tunes or play any riffs. I hope he would agree with that statement (or we would have another Phil on our hands).

Re: An answer i had from Jack Smooth..

As for Ron, I have a couple of questions: 1) Do you have any memories of the session for Kev Bird's Unfriendly recording? I love that track, the almost backwards mid section, and pushing beats n synth lines. 2) Why did you start Smooth Recordings as a sub label? What was the impetus, or idea behind...

Re: An answer i had from Jack Smooth..

I see that Basement Phil has commented on the interview :D Yes, and he's been put straight by Spencer T (Deep Shizzol). There are some amusing bits in the comments section at the bottom. The bloke (Phil) lives in cuckoo land, but to be honest I want to stop talking about him, he actually gives me t...

Re: An answer i had from Jack Smooth..

Ha ha - not had an Ozrics rant in years - it felt good  I was working in Gurgaon (Delhi) for 2 weeks then had 5 days at the end for a bit of a holiday. One of the lads I was working with mentioned Udaipur... and I've ended up staying here all 5 days! Delhi for any length of time is a stres...

Re: An answer i had from Jack Smooth..

@Ron... Just following on from a Kraftwork remark of mine several chapters back  Let me just say that the Ozric Tentacles have got to be one of the worst bands in the history of music. Their annoying trite pestered me throughout the 90's & quite frankly their followers' annoyed me almost a...

I would consider it, but pretty sure the DATs are not error free. If one needs to be re-done, the whole lot has to be re-done for consistency. That's a fair bit of work that we don't have time for right now.

Re: An answer i had from Jack Smooth..

What advice would you give anyone starting out? This is what we did well, this is what I would try to avoid. Avoid mixing with talentless, attention seeking assholes... better that you're the asshole that can learn something from someone who knows and has done better. It's all about learning, readi...

Re: An answer i had from Jack Smooth..

And afaik Derrick May and Kms always credited Cybotron as being massively important. Yep, Cybotron is Juan, he is the king of Detroit Techno. It's worth noting that most of the others listed as influencing Techno were themselves influenced by Kraftwerk: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kraftwerk See '...

Re: An answer i had from Jack Smooth..

What's wrong with prog rock? It's isn't Techno, that's what's wrong with it... not in context. If you want to talk prog rock, then Ozric Tentacles are my first choice... they may not be from the 70s, but, for me, they are bewilderingly good and I will never come close to matching such effortless sk...

Re: An answer i had from Jack Smooth..

edit: just to clarify, i'm explicitly talking about US club music scene during 1983, 84 & 85. I think of 85 as the year that techno really started with the release of no ufos. On Sreetsounds Electro 4 listen to 'Techno City'... for me that is the moment when Juan took Kraftwerk's electro sound into...

I would say between 94 and 95, we were using that term then.

Re: An answer i had from Jack Smooth..

Discovered this group a couple of years back - amazing blend of electronic and real instruments :) Each album (or the ones I've listened to anyway) are all fairly different to each other, but you still know it's gotta be them involved. Mate, I've seen them live twice... ridiculous, effortless skill...

Yep exactly, it would be easy to look at this list and think they must all be loaded because of their huge output, but for most that's not the case. They were simply the brains behind the music and got taken advantage of.
Rings a few bells.
