Pheweeeeee what a top night!
Disastrous start when we spent over an hour queuing in subzero temps despite being about 100 feet from the door - smarrte said he still felt the cold after we'd been in there for hours :-) It was well worth the chill tho...
Got in to hear Squirrels set, usual squirrel stuff for those that know, mix of 91-92 anthems, but he did liven it up by playing some rarely heard mixes of all the tunes, nice set to get into it anyways.
Flashback next, never disappoints IMO, but excelled himself last night with a cream of 92/some 93 hardcore set, kev bird, pennywise, music for da people, in effect, this sound..., crackman and loads I hadn't heard for years, dunno how he does it every time!
I can't really comment on Zincs d'n'b set, I only listened for 10 secs before we all headed off to the Jenkins Lane reunion for an hour of 120bpm classics. Smarrte got on the mic once again, but was able to keep his garage antics to a minimum thank fuck! Heard Zincs last tune - recent Andy C track - Body Rock which sounded gorgeous over the camden system.
Lucozade & Perry K...what can I say...the best nuskool set I've ever heard with the odd classic thrown in. Beautiful massive hard as nails breaks, and I've *never* seen a dancefloor get so packed and funky to nuskool before. The scratching (lucozade/perry k seem to remember that dj's can do more than mix tunes) was phenomenal, easily Sy quality :-) I hadn't heard 90% of the nuskool stuff, Grace said (I think...) that it was a lot of their own stuff, if so get on and release it! Also happy to say that third odd tune in was by some garage producer called smarrte; Fall Down got played out! For everyone that has seen what Foundacafe can do to a crowd - Fall Down is no different. I've had the tune for ages now, but it seriously needs to be heard over a large system for full effect! Smarrte has some competition now tho...also dropped was the ectopic beats e.p - nice work from them, the tune went down a bomb...another one that needs to be heard out to appreciate the quality breaks!
Ratpack on next...I was all ready for the Jenkins Lane room again...how wrong could I be. Easily the best Ratpack set I've heard, again loads of nuskool and a few anthems, including (if I heard right) a blinding harder remix of clipper that DJ Herman made? (Apologies if I'm way wrong, it was at its wooliest here!)
Went back into Jenkins Lane for Devious D's d'n'b set, more classics including gino latino - welcome which I haven't heard since...too long ago.
Not sure what happened to Herman for the last set, my mashed brain thought that Devious D carried on? Probably the only obvious set of the night, just anthem after anthem, by 5:30 everyone was ready to go so...we went.
Gotta say ta to the meetup crew, made for a top night - chris, smarrte, mike g, maxx, penfold, ant, pete, dean, kim, also Grace for letting me know I'm not the only one whose back hurts at 4am :-)
