It was so rare for this to happen. Most djs were either playing sets mainly full of dubplates (grooverider, randall) or sets full of recent anthems (hype in 94). New years eve sets often saw a bit of reaching back but it often sounded like to much of a hodgepodge as the tunes wouldn't mix. Ratpack would be the exception to this but were generally sneered at post 92.

I started raving early 1993 and think anyone raving between 89-91 would havr thought hardcore raves in 93 were atrocious. Full of kids, trying to be cool taking way too many not very good quality drugs to too fast, often pretty dark music. I think 1992 brought alot of new people to the scene either inspired by older siblings or older kids at school who told them about raves. I certainly got the impression that alot of people at the raves i went to didn’t really like the music that much in 93 but went mainly to take drugs with friends. I really did love the music and still do and believe 93 produced the best music of the period.
That Vision video does look shit but also quite indicative of what it was like. That being said i had amazing times at Labyrynth, Roller Express and the Sanctuary, so it also depended massively on the night and mix of djs.

Dougal always seemed to drop quite a few from 1992 a few years later. Mostly filling the void until happy hardcore picked up the slack.

Yesterday I watched the video of this event - Vision: The Return Of The Warehouse Concept. We all know that Chris Griffin was a shady fucker (as part 2 of this event would prove), but watching this video really made me question raving in '93.

The event looks horrible, DJs way up in the sky in an massive warehouse with the crowd seemingly sparse. None of them seem to be smiling, when questioned about the event, rather that the "best fucking rave eveeeeeer" of 1992 it was more "it's alright I s'pose". The video itself is rubbish, only shows 4 DJs (slipmatt, Top Buzz, Grooverider,Top Buzz & Timebandit - did the actual DJs on the flyer turn up?) + a dreadful Human Resource PA. The interviewer near the end makes you average questioner on a rave video seem like David Frost at his peak.

I wasn't around in 93, were there a lot of raves like this then? I'm sure there were still loads of good ones, but this made me question that a bit.

I cheered myself up by putting on footage of my first ever rave, Dreamscape 12. Just a year later but the venue is packed, everyone is happy, it looks professional and it amde me actually want to go to a rave.

Any thoughts? Anyone go to the Vision event and have a different opinion? Were raves in 93 shit?

Bit of a random question , but around 94/95 were there any sets being played by reasonably well known DJs, or certain tracks being played still by djs, which were released 92/early 93? Either as a full throwback set thing (less likely), or just one or two stone cold classics , "ahead of their time" tracks, or personal favorites of a few DJS which were still getting aired 94/95?

It seems like by that point, people were fully into playing the latest stuff possible, just curious because I know I'm pretty sure I've heard some later sets where "valley of the shadows" would make an appearance. Also, I was just checking some youtube video of a set marked as "November 94", and "switch to 33" gets dropped - this seems VERY unlikely tune for end of 94 for me and made me think the date must be wrong. Who knows though, for all I know people could be playing sections of sets of older tunes in some circumstances?

Wow that's great! The Ellis Dee set is one of the first tapes I had and I never knew it was played in broad daylight, quite strange to watch actual footage of the set.

There are quite a few decent ones, with at least 3 good tracks.

I did make a massive list with links to discogs, only to be told that "this post has too many links" & wouldn't post it. Lost all the info...
Very annoying.
