Macbook Air

Post by dj jedi » Wed Jan 16, 2008 3:21 pm

http://www.apple.com/uk/macbookair/

This looks pretty cool, don't think I'd buy one myself as I prefer power over portability but I can see it being the way of things in the future (No optical drive or moving parts etc)

Would you be saying that if MS had designed it?

As if that would ever happen ;)

In all seriousness, as I said I wouldn't buy it myself. But it's a new product and some people will have opinions on it, good and bad. Hence I posted it on a discussion board. Is that OK?

The keyboard looks a bit awkward to use - reminds me of a Speccy.

Who would pay over a grand for an underspeced overpriced laptop ? (Maybe some one with more money than sense)

Just noticed that the Macbook Pro is only 0.24" thicker and only about 2 lbs heavier [-X

It's a step in the right direction at least. Yet more innovative design by Apple.

It's not overpriced either - people who want something different to the norm and who have cash to spend should have the option of buying something that isn't affordable by everybody.

You can't get away from how cool it looks, the same as most Apple products, but it is pretty expensive. Not sure that the reduced size and weight makes that much of a difference, my MacBook is fine in both regards. The solid state drive is definitely the way forward but that is likely to be a pretty expensive option for at least a year or so.

I was more interested in the iTunes movie rentals. Primarily as it means they've added fixed period rental to the Apple DRM, which in turn I'm hoping means they can sort a deal out with the BBC so that we can download programmes to watch on iPods. I seldom watch tv when its actually on and just watch what I want on my iPod / MacBook when I want so that would be good news for me.

why dont they price it at £10k then, it's not a case of affordability it's within the price range of most laptop buyers it's just well under spec for the p/tag

It's simply a fashion accessory and good luck to those that want to buy a laptop short term for that purpose.

I do want an IMAC though, anyone know of the best places to look on t'internet???

Got to love Apples design dept.. they make a boring mundane object desirable. Its only a laptop at the end of the day lets be honest.. boy do I want one bad :)

I think it looks cool - yeah, it's overpriced for now but it sets the bar for other suppliers.

Overpriced for what though? There isn't any direct equivalent. If Toshiba made a laptop that small and light, to the same spec for £900 then, yeah, maybe we can say it's over priced. Mind you, it would have to run Windows, so you'd knock off a few quid for that.

Nah, just from a personal viewpoint - i.e. it's overpriced for what I personally would pay for a mega-slimline laptop.

If I were lugging my laptop around more, I'd be more likely to pay a premium for lack of weight, but for that price it's not worth it for me.

Can see that it would be great for others though.

ah yeah, exactly. there's a market for 'specialist' Apple products. Always will be. Obviously, not for everyone.

Loks like more of a fashion accessory than a proper laptop, think ills tick to Dell or Acer.
