Criminal Minds

Post by rage » Wed Aug 26, 2015 5:44 pm

What are people's favourite releases from this crew? I seem to have amassed quite a bit of their stuff over the years but I can only really think of Baptised By Dub and Joyrider EPs that are really good, the others are all well produced but I don't really get them on a musical level. They seem pretty sought after so I'm considering selling them on, but would like to replace them with better ones if I can find some!

Thanks mate, yeah I've been after Mind Bombing for ages, waiting for a nice copy to come up! Got the Criminal EP but not the other two. I've got 3 or 4 on Labello, I just can't get into them but I've kept them anyway.

I still owe you that track mate. I've had computer problems and can't rip at the moment, it's not recording properly on one channel. Gonna get a new computer in the next few months and it'll be the first thing I do!

Aren't the labello ones a bit more Jungley??
Not really my thing either.

What was the tune you were going to rip - I can't remember! :)

Have you ordered a new computer yet?
This place is quite good - I usually get a barebones system and add bits to it:

I wouldnt call them that Jungley really, I would still say they were Hardcore but they're certainly not in the same league as Baptised By Dub EP.

Seem reasonably sought after though so I guess some people rate them.

I really dont know what to do about a computer. I planned to set up a portable studio with a Macbook Pro, I have bought all the other stuff, a really nice RME audio interface and mini keyboard but I sent the Macbook back as it had a fault and I thought I'd wait for the new one to come out. Since then I've upgraded my knackered old XP laptop to Windows 10 which I love so I'm considering staying with PC but cant make my mind up. Will check that site out for inspiration!

Yes! Flinny's Theme and both versions of Headhunter are brilliant. That EP is so good, I know its a re-release of sorts but still one of the best 4 trackers out there.

Gonna check out Ruffneck Dancer now, I've got the EP but I have overlooked it I must admit.

It was that remastered Tango track by the way RG :)

What are your favourites mate? The ones that I love I love so much I want more :D Most of them I have bought off the back of Baptised By Dub hoping for more of the same.

Also, anyone know if this is just another pressing of Bubble Riddim & Ting or something different? http://www.discogs.com/Criminal-Minds-2 ... ase/221753

Yeah, those ones are pretty .... boring aren't they - almost like they just rushed to put something out.

Not used Win10 so can't comment on that, but Novatech are very good - used them for well over 10 years for getting bits and bobs from - as well as ebay for certain things as well :)
If you know how to build pcs, it's good to get one of the semi built cases & then add bits to it.
Otherwise, it has areas on there to pick the sort of pc you're going to need.
I think they do laptops as well -but they're not for me (too tricky to upgrade or add to).

Yes thats exactly how they sound to me! I dont mind as long as theres at least one good track on there, can think of countless Reinforced and Formation 12s that have earned my love with just one decent track but I dont see any point owning a record if I'm not feeling any of the tunes on it. Rather it was in the hands of someone who appreciates it.

Having said that, if I had the tunes on a mixtape or bought the record in 93 and grew up with it I would probably love it, just like all the tracks I do love that no one else seems to care about! Funny how memories can attach themselves to music.

That is good mate, the stabs clash with the synth a bit to my ears but other than that its a funky track. I love the scratching on their stuff, quality!

Their first release Guilty As Charged is super rare now. Someones shelled out 300 for it, crazy!

ok i'll stand up for them then \:D/

i really like a lot of their tunes, i have to say.

the most obvious is the Mind Bombing LP - full of tracks that are both fast (160-ish +) and with a fair few unusual elements not in a million other tunes of that era.

that "2 minds" EP is another favourite of mine - the A side track has a nice sort of almost-happy feel to it - a few bars of off-beat ravey goodness, but still dropping back into the breakbeats.

and "Drums of Doom" - original and Slipmatt remix. both big tunes. and i also love "evil" which is the b side of the Drums of Doom remix. love the intro with the bells.

not really a fan of Baptised by Dub though - but of their early stuff Flynny's Theme is a tune. and their earlier proto-hardcore hip hop stuff is pretty cool too.

i think what i like about their tunes, which maybe is what makes them sound unremarkable if you don't like them - but they seem to be a bit more left of centre. a few more unusual ideas amongst the usual rave noises, chopped up beats that aren't just more amens, and a little bit faster than some of the other records of their time. Mind Bombing being the peak of this I think.
