Copyrights on vocals, etc...

Post by Eyeski3000 » Fri Jun 12, 2015 6:32 pm

Hi,

I've seen that some of the old skool labels have their stuff on itunes and I thought about putting my albums on itunes myself and making some small cash maybe if anyone cares to. I'm gonna do artwork and that type of thing myself, can't be hard.

My question is about the copyright on vocal's and other little bits and pieces. Would you get pulled up by whoever owns the vocal's now or does it not matter anymore being 20 plus years old?

Everything in my tunes are original to a point, but I have some hip hop vocal's, acapella's in most tunes, film samples, etc...

Would do you think?

Thanks

In most countries (including the UK), music copyright lasts for 50 years. Whether anyone would notice or not, is another matter :)

If you put things up for sale on these sorts of sites, you will have to sign to say you've cleared any copyright stuff - otherwise any issues will land on you, not who's selling the tunes.

I've had a video of my old Tigerclaw tune, which sampled a 70s kung fu film (Heroes II) taken down due to copyright - and that's obscure!

There are loads of things trailing the internet looking for copyright material so it's best to be very careful where you upload stuff.

For the money you're likely to make, I'd say it isn't worth the risk.

To make money, put out limited vinyl with pre-sale on specialist sites like this - stay as far under the radar as possible.

Thanks boys!

In my heart, I knew that would be the case.

I would just do a limited run or do another hard boiled... 005 lol

Bring back the Hard Boiled Eyes. Some tunes on them.

Yes you will... but only if the owners can be bothered to chase you, and most probably won't.

That's exactly why most composers/producers don't have music careers anymore.

Not having a go at you BTW, it's become the global standard way to treat music.

You ought to stand in the corner for 5 minutes though and reflect on your behaviour.

Goldie was talking about this in a video a while ago and pretty much nailed my attitude towards it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oApNAsPK_So Around the 2.05 mark.

I don't believe many artists/labels cleared vocals or samples back in the day,
But they are very precious about "their" work now, due to youtube copyright take downs...etc etc
Funny that lol

Yeah a good point that...

FWIW, I don't have a problem with youtube vids of my stuff. I have always been supportive of the main oldskool uploaders (mickeybeam, etc).

Agreed and very hypocritical. I sample the shit out of anything I can get my hands on, but that's why my tracks are all freeware to download. I don't profiteer from others works, I just do my own thing with it and get it out there. Simple as.

:D

Peace...

Hardcore was always about giving it the one finger to the rules & to see where it took you.

So long as your not ripping of a whole track & making it out to be yours..... Fair game in my eyes ;)
