DJs doing other styles

Post by ian saunders » Thu Apr 03, 2014 8:12 pm

DJ Sy - The Scratchmaster's Obsession (house mix)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ozMje-z8mk
http://www.discogs.com/DJ-Sy-The-Scratc ... ase/206286

How good is this mix!

I remember seeing this compilation BITD and not buying it - never saw it again anywhere. Decided to give the house mix a listen tonight and I'm loving it. Scratching (but not too much), good tune selection and unfussy mixing.

Anyone else got any examples of DJs playing good (or shit) sets that weren't their normal styles? I'm not talking about Grant Nelson's garage sets, more Easygroove doing his Grooveeasy sets or Loftgroover playing handbag or Derrick May playing happy hardcore ;)

What's that tune 28 mins in? The one with the "love" sample.

The house set is great. Was a big favourite back when I was at uni. My housemate had the CD.

Mike Dred (Kosmik Kommando) posted up a great 2001 era garage set a while ago plus some of his old acid mixes from the late 80s, but sadly no longer seems to be online.

Easygrooves house sets at Fantazia One Step Beyond & Universe Time Machine are two of my favourite old skool sets. Grooverider used to play house sets too.

Hi,

Yes Grooverider played gr8 house sets, suited his mixing style much better.

Weird you guys take note of the Sy house set, when his Jungle set from the same album completely blows it away!

note the tracklistings of all 3 sets have errors, I know the correct tracks, as I actually emulated all 3 sets BITD myself!

Obviously, the most noted DJ for different styles done well, was indeed Easygroove. I've heard him do breakbeat, gabba, house, jungle, drum n bass... you name it.

An obvious choice, but Slipmatt is a real chameleon. I've heard him play pretty much everything from disco to upfront hardcore over the years, and he is very competent and clearly knows his stuff, not just a DJ playing random records he's never heard before.

Billy Bunter too, he plays pretty much a different style every week on his Kool FM show.

Slipmatt played a small venue in my local town a few weeks back & smashed it. He often gets a bad press but his mixing was spot on & he played loads of underground bangers as well as the usual anthems.

one of the things i liked about Bangface when i first moved here (06/07) was that they'd often have the same DJs in the second room as the main room, but they'd play a different style. a pretty cool idea in general i think, worked well with the people they booked then.

for DJ playing a variety of styles, Bass Generator is one who gives Easygroove a run for his money, especially in doing it in the same set. however not necessarily always smoothly :D to put it mildly.

modern day I think Jerome Hill takes some beating - great oldskool of many types, techno, wonky bassline stuff, acid...

TC, you'd know about this: What were the Jungle DJs who played in Scotland like. I know some switched to a happier or more 4-beat sound. Any cop?

What's the track with the Far Out piano in it and the Seduction - Seduction vocal? And do you know where I can DL a copy? :)
