BRSS 026 - delayed or originally missed?

Post by extreme » Fri Jun 14, 2013 6:00 pm

BRSS 026 was released in 1994, but going by the numbers it should have been 1993 really, up until 030 were 1993.

There always seems to be a story behind these things, anyone know if it was just delayed or possibly something else was lined up for 026 & then dropped etc..?

Not sure what's going on there. Like you say the catalogue numbers suggest that it was produced in 93 but those tracks don't have a 93 sound to them as far as I'm concerned. Also uses the new gold label design that they started using in 94. Everything about it is 94 apart from the catalogue number. Tis very strange. Maybe Ron could shed some light on this?

Not sure... I remember making it with them and the year 1994 means nothing if it was released in Nov/Dec or Jan/Feb as the scene was moving very quickly at the time.

I see I'm only credited as the engineer, which is a bit of an under statement.

;-)

There wasn't exactly a strict release schedule, quite possibly it was either put out early or late for any number of reasons. Basement didn't have a corporate management style, quite the opposite.

I remember thinking the same when I bought it along with blinded by science, was one of the first tunes I noticed with the gold style label on basement.
How much input did top buzz have on their tunes? Did they have an idea or was it all down to the engineer?

Cheers for the reply Ron :)

I remembered a Nicky Blackmarket Eruption FM mix i had where he plays 'the wok'. I've just found it & its from July 1994, he says "this is the brand spanking new Top Buzz out in about 2 weeks"..

Well , they certainly did more than some other people, but I doubt they would deny my work with them wasn't purely an engineer role, except for the original of 'Living In Darkness' which I only re-eqd, as it was a bit of a bass heavy mess.

You don't need those to be organised.

That is precisely why I don't wear them, regardless of how important the meeting/client is!

That was part of the Basement 'let's have it played for half a year before anyone can buy it policy' - which I always thought was daft to say the least. I had many semi-heated disucssions with them on that matter - to me it simply seemed like bad business.

"This DJ wants exclusivity... "That DJ wants exclusivity...", for me granting this simply reduced sales potential = 'who want's to buy what they were dancing to 5 months ago' vs 'who want's to buy what they first heard last night'? As if the question needs asking...

Yeah I can think of so many instances of that mentality back-firing when I was buying upfront D&B from 96-2000. By the time a track finally comes out, its sound doesn't fit with what you are playing. This music evolves too quickly to hold releases back for months/years.

IMO the best tactic by far was the 'VIP mix' culture for those that wanted exclusivity. Mickey Finn managed to sell thousands of records AND have tracks nobody else did at the same time, great move looking back on it.
