Thoughts on the Acid House scene of old?
Did you love it or loathe it?
Did you actually prefer it over Hardcore?
Did any of you attend any of the old raves back then?
What I'd give to of been around in those days! Damn...

Re: Thoughts on the Acid House scene of old?
Missed it all by about 3 years - I can't say I was THAT bothered at the time. I was 13 in 1988 and it kind of passed me by to be honest.
Even in 1991 when i started listening to Hardcore, 'Acid House' (in terms of House music from 88/89) never floated my boat as it was generally a lot less aggressive/exciting than the Belgian stuff that i was listening to at the time (303 based stuff excepted, which I liked).
To me now, 'Acid House' is a bit like the Rave Generation's 'Easy Listening' (and i mean that in a good way!)
As for the actual scene - who knows. Everyone knows the legend even if they weren't there!
I wasn't old enough to be anywhere near going out, and by 1991 when I was, I would guess things were a bit different. I reckon the nearest I got to it (in terms of vibe anyway)was probably Club UK in 1994/1995.....

Re: Thoughts on the Acid House scene of old?
as a latecomer to this music (relatively), i don't curse the fact i missed it half as much as with hardcore. even though it must have been incredible as an experience, the music doesn't grab me as much. new beat on the other hand, from slightly later i guess, i much prefer (and maybe has a better claim to influencing hardcore?)
i do think proper acid house is far from easy listening though...lower tempo, but like all good acid music the best stuff has a sort of creepy tension throughout it that's quite headfucky. and i can definitely see how alien it must have sounded at the time. (or even now, frankly!)

Simply awesome!
Hearing Centerforce 88.3 back in 1989 playing this wild new music was just mindblowing for me. The tunes semed to originate from all over the place - Europe, Britain and especially New York (Todd Terry, Lenny Dee, Frankie Bones etc) - there were NO rules whatsoever
Check out this recent Daniel Bunter 88/89 acid house mix on Soundloud for a TRUE flavour of what it was all about (Slipmatt even pops into the studio for a bit) -->

This is what it REALLY sounded like BITD!

Love it, but I don't listen to it so much. Tracks like "Your Only Friend" have a real dark edge to them that I like. Proper creepy female vocal sample in the background.

Love it. Wish i was able to be a part of that scene but was just a bit too young at the time, I only heard the anthems, a few tapes & compilations in the late 80s but when the hardcore/jungle split took place in 94 I went back to the chicago house & detroit techno sound & caught up on a lot of the tunes I missed out on. Would like to hear how the clubs & warehouse parties from the 80s compared to the early 90s raves. Loads of good music from that acid house era

I was bang into acid house when I was 14/15 at school, used to wear a smiley pinned to my school trousers.

Re: Thoughts on the Acid House scene of old?
Respect it and think it was an amazing time for dance music but have to admit on playing it now I find lots of it boring and terribly produced- still cant help but have love for the roots of the scene but was all about the 90's for me personally. .

Similar to G-Man, I respect it and there are some tracks I really like but it doesn't give me the same feeling that hardcore does.
Re: Thoughts on the Acid House scene of old?
No nostalgic attachment for me as it was before my time, hadn't heard any of it really until the late 90s. There are quite a few tracks I really like, and it's probably my favourite kind of music to dance to, but a lot of it is quite repetitive.

Fucking loved/love it. This dark Beltram track sums it all up for me, esp the bit at about 2m:34s. Pretty much a perfect acid house track imho.
:D
Peace...

Do the class of 87 dislike 92 hardcore in the same way I can't stand American EDM?
