Who is it?

90-94, who was your standout DJ for each year?

I only started listening to hardcore in 92, so I'll do 92-96. This is based on the tapes I rinsed the most those years:

92 = Ellis Dee
93 = Rat Pack
94 = Sy
95 = Dougal
96 = Hype

Hi,

Back in 91, most of Fabio's sets were with Grooverider.

Fabio played out and about in London alone quite a lot, as did Grooverider.

Hype was virtually untouchable in '96. His sets from the Skelters back then are legendary.

Ha, I thought that would raise a few eyebrows, but I stand by my choice. I got a Dougal @ Rhythm Station tape for xmas in 1994, and I played it constantly throughout 95. It's before he started playing the uber-cheese he is now known for, this set is full of early bouncy techno, as well as some of the more underground UK stuff like Rabbit City, plus a lot of the best breakbeat hardcore from that era (Knite Force, Impact, Universal etc.) For me that one set defines the late 94/early 95 happy hardcore sound.

1991 Easygroove
1992 Seduction
1993 Sy
1994 Dougal

I'm going with Dougal too, championed the way for happy hardcore without doubt, Dreamscape, World Dance, Sutra in Bristol etc.

The others speak for themselves IMO. Would also agree with Hype 95-96 = Legend !

Here's the Dougal set I'm on about if anyone is interested, it's from roughly October/November 94 at The Rhythm Station. MC Hico on the mic (I'm sure the south coast guys will remember him.) This is ripped from my own tape so probably hasn't been uploaded before. See what you think...

i've heard Dougal play a few tunes i wouldn't expect on some older sets. i first heard Out of Order - Tears on a set of his from Dreamscape, which is quite a full on, not cheesy hardcore / techno track...and heard him mix up some of the scottish / dutch stuff that wasn't played as often in england. so i could believe he was alright once!

although saying that on said sets the mixing's often pretty ropey :D

Always been a legend for me, his sets around 2005 at Hardcore Heaven v Slinky were amazing, never failed to get the crowd moving and atmosphere electric.
