Vinyl is preferable really but unless you know your release will sell well, then you could end up only shifting 20-30 copies, which after spending £500-600 on getting it pressed could end up with a large hole in your pocket.

Mp3 sales aren't much cop either - think from the ones from bat beat I've put up in various stores over the years, I've probably got around £20-30 back.

If vinyl sells well, you could end up with a bit of profit to make it more worthwhile, but sales have really dwindled over the years since the early 2000s when it first kicked off again.

And aside from the 2 current main online shops, there is no distribution like there was some years back as well, so even shifting 100 is tricky as most needs to be done by yourself to make sure you don't end up loosing money.

What happened to Darkus and HPZ? I've still got him on HWND as the main supplier for HWND Records :-)

His shop has gone as far as I'm aware.
Distro via Nu-Urban seems to have stopped as well.

2 main online stores are now :

Personally I don't see the fall of distributors as a completely bad thing. Selling them yourself is a lot more work and you sell less copies, but you also make at least double if not triple or quadruple the amount of profit on each one you sell. 500 through a distributor @ £2 per unit is the same as selling 100 yourself for £10 each. Plus the money goes straight in your pocket, you don't have to wait months for it (or risk not getting it at all.)

In fact the only plus sides of distribution IMO are getting your music to a wider audience, and not having to do any work yourself. And in the grand scheme of things the difference between selling 100 to friends on a forum or 250 through a distributor isn't exactly going to be the difference between world domination

i have a project lined up myself, need some funding, as and when it appears i will have some previously unreleased tracks from a well known lord of the old skool. nothing revealed until funding is with me though.

i can guarantee sales of these tracks as theyre absolute bassline slammers!!!!

more d&b 93-94 tip, but these tracks are EPIC

id happily sell any failed vinyl for anyone. i shift em internationally. sales speak for themselves when theyre all gone!!!

All this not selling etc is par for the course with music that only applys to a select crowd.

Labels like sublogic and elusives 9t2 retro were a god send, hats off to all involved, long live VINYL!!!!

Good work mate.

On the subject of failed vinyl so to speak I have around 6-7 copies left of my 1st works self financed EP that was out late in 2011. Wouldn't mind shifting them, prob is now I live in NZ postage is a lot more expensive,

Good luck with it all, long live vinyl.
