Re: do you agree with Cox here?

and at the same time there's a lot of stupid stereotypes attributing more value to any music with more of a (perceived) blackness. benevolent racism's still racism after all. but really i don't think hardcore's any whiter than the UK at large. it doesn't really say that much about the sort of scene ...

Re: most irritating 'anthem'?

The drums on In Effect are so damn good, really heavy! I can only think of one other tune which uses that particular break - apollo 13 by jo (Also a tune!) Unless it's just a variant on a much more rinsed break and I'm being really dumb?

Re: do you agree with Cox here?

To answer your question, the dark side of rave in northern parts was taken up by gabba. The drug for which is speed by the way. I think taking acid at hardcore raves was kinda a thing in Scotland at least. In that I heard about people doing it but wasn't there to know if they are outliers. I found i...

Re: do you agree with Cox here?

to be honest i think what killed the inventiveness of rave music is just time. it's much easier to be interesting when there's lots of new ideas not yet done. it wouldn't be possible for the pace of change in the early 90s to be sustained. even producers who don't just want to copy others will inevi...

Re: Favourite Belgian Tech tunes are?

Seems that holland gets a bit of a raw deal out of this. A lot of great music came out of belgium but the dutch also contributed a load to early 90s hardcore techno. A lot of the tunes already mentioned in this thread were by dutch artists. Hithouse Records, Lower Eastside Records, ESP Records, Mid...

Re: How can you go to a happy hardcore rave without ending o

I find E to be an emotionally vapid drug. Love it to bits but it's not serious or intelligent, cos it only ever has shown me what I want to see, which is really quite conservative and predictable. But psychedelics are messy and unpredictable, which is a bit like life. do you need everything to be s...

Re: How can you go to a happy hardcore rave without ending o

So what's more valid about the positivity of HH? I'm genuinely trying to understand it. Well, I think that's your trouble, that's not what I'm saying :p I think you can only "understand" music so far. There's so much tied up in individual taste, memories and personal experience. We don't all feel t...

Re: How can you go to a happy hardcore rave without ending o

I know this is an awful generalisation and snobbish stereotype but I couldn't imagine going to an HH rave and talk about getting beaten up/treated atrociously by the cops because I'm not white. It just feels like escapism, which is fine, but I like my escapism to be aware of the fact that is escapi...

Re: An answer i had from Jack Smooth..

plus there is little in the way of music in it. So, based on that...have you always included a melodic element in your work? Obviously there's a lot of techno, and drum & bass, which is more exclusively about rhythm and percussion and so on. Has anything like that ever appealed? (to make or to list...

Re: How can you go to a happy hardcore rave without ending o

Like, how do people find this stuff soulful?. serious answer to probable troll question... i suppose it depends what you mean by soulful. but if that means that it something to someone, that stirs genuine emotion...happy hardcore does that for me, and I'll try to explain. part of it is definitely m...

Re: When the split happened...

when i've heard mixes of 94-95 house i actually recognise shitloads of it from 94-95 happy hardcore. certainly just about any tune with a big piano in it! although a lot of the italodance from that time beats both uk house and happy hardcore in terms of cheese by a long way \:D/ Vinylgroover - Aweso...

Re: Oldskool DJ's that get overlooked, but...

You say this, but have you ever been in a club and a train wreck of a mix is going on? Even a pilled up mong starts booing it! plenty of times...to be honest I've not really noticed a reaction like that before. maybe a few people wincing at it - but if the tunes are good i'd say it's more shrugged ...

Re: Oldskool DJ's that get overlooked, but...

Motivation i think is the point. If they still get a great response, there's no impetus for them to look at how to improve. You get better at a skill from practice, but if you're not trying to hone that skill you maybe won't change much. I think some DJs maybe just aren't bothered by a skill that is...
