Re: Borai - Anybody from London EP

Not a big fan of that Borai. Oldskool seems to just be a defacto thing all sorts of younger artists can reference for instant points without thinking it through much or doing anything clever with it. Not that I expect everyone to do clever stuff - I'm perfectly happy w/ stuff that shows knowledge +...

Re: Great tunes/remixes that SS managed to ruin with a...

Sound of the future - The Warning. Starts off as a wicked 93 dark jungle techno tune, with ruff clattering breakbeats and sinister atmospherics. Then around the 2:35 mark an awful, out of tune, and not even serialistic piano riff comes in and it honestly sounds like a toddler banging away on a cheap...

Re: Fusion This Saturday

Regressive rock is a pun on really bad prog rock that isn't progressive or regurgitates a 70s ethos. A bit like regressive house. Sure, the idea of house/techno music and house music culture is established, but I think it is the original seperation between that and anthem rave. Like, I feel that you...

Re: Oldskool DJ's that get overlooked, but...

Ratty's my favourite DJ from those times by far! One of my faves of all time, too. '92-'93 (especially '93. His Obsessed sets from then are astounding) he was miles ahead of everyone. Apparently at a Perception rave in '91 (where he made his name), he was supposed to have blown every DJ to bits tha...

Re: Fusion This Saturday

I think it's definitely true that having the right start to a set in a new style is important. Most DJs playing happy now don't really pitch it up like everyone used to in the 90s, so a decent 92 set doesn't need to be *that* much slower. But at the end of the day, there are plenty of people who li...

Re: The state of DJ'ing nowadays...

I struggle to understand why anyone would even touch the spindle/platter or even the vinyl. This is not knocking anyone, it just feels so counterproductive. You don't even need to look at anything when you're using the pitch control (I would know because I'm visually impaired.) Just take one finger ...

Re: Borai - Anybody from London EP

I like it. Tho I much prefer Batu from the Bristol axis. Just listen to this collapsing slinky darkside technoid galore. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1uP_oYi_y0 Or this, played it at a houseparty a few weeks ago and it blew the roof off. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eV23D-syI5U Alex Coulton h...

Re: The state of DJ'ing nowadays...

Agree, I've tried it... I didn't have to do a thing except; choose, cue and start... mixes locked for full track duration. I have no problem at all with DJs who do this. Beat mixing is easy, there is nothing outrageously skilled to claim or prove by being able to match beats. It's the same comparis...

Re: The state of DJ'ing nowadays...

This idea that digital djs don't spend time beat matching is a complete and utter myth unless you play rigidly quantised music with no swing a la trance and hard house. Sorry I disagree, I have Traktor Scratch for my decks and as soon as you press sync, it locks perfectly on 99% of tracks including...

This idea that digital djs don't spend time beat matching is a complete and utter myth unless you play rigidly quantised music with no swing a la trance and hard house. There's plenty of analogue techno that requires you to pay attention to the track, and 93-96 era jungle is an absolute given, I st...

Re: The state of DJ'ing nowadays...

Even in ableton you have to spend time warping/timestretching on a grid for it to all fit together, so it's not ta-da, one button and everything's in sync.

Re: Fusion This Saturday

How can you leave to "Heart of gold", but listen to stuff like this (check 15.50 in for utter nonsense!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mls34z8M70c I'd rather listen to "HOF" on LOOP for 8 hours than this rubbish! haha where did that come from? are you deliberately looking up music you don't like ...
