Stu Chapman
I first got into mixing in the summer of 91 when my best mate got his decks - he was well into his hardcore, and we spentmany hours at his place learning to mix. It wasn't long before I was hooked. I got my own 1200's soon after that and concentrated on mastering my turntable skills - like being able to throw in tracks and scratching.
When breakbeat music went into that transitional period where it developed
from the happier sound to the darker style in '93,
I found myself concentrating more on the tunes of the previous 2 years. There were a lot of tracks I'd missed nut on
and spent a lot of time trying to ID and buy them. (And to this day I still have a 50 strong wantslist)!!!
After feeling a little stagnant musically, I got into the funky US house & dance scene (93-95). When this music got cheesy I
then got into Jungle and DNB (95-98), but in the end the music went all dark
and I lost interest in mixing it altogether.
I decided to sell up some of my records, and got rid of my House and DNB collections, leaving just my hardcore.
Since then I've solely worked on completing my oldskool collection.
I have had various DJ names throughout my career. I DJ'd in Cambridge quite a few times at a club called Route 66, and also
managed to get a slot at Cambridge Cellars during my DNB days - warming up
for Funky Flirt.
I have played on a few of london's pirates - from guesting on other DJ's shows, to having my own on Rude Awakening.
Last year I could be heard regularly spinning oldskool or jungle sets on
Paltalk over the internet, and a few of the forum members will probably remember hearing me play on there at some
point or another. My most recent outing as a DJ was on my trip around Australia this year when
I played an oldskool set at a breaks night
called Blueprint at a club called Beach Road in Surfers Paradise,
Queensland.
